Data Sources
U.S. Census Bureau — American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates, 2023. The ACS is the premier source for detailed population and housing data. We use table B01001 (Sex by Age) for senior population counts and age breakdowns at the state and county level. Income data comes from the ACS Subject Tables (S1903).
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) — Nursing Home Compare. CMS publishes quality ratings, inspection results, staffing data, and penalty histories for every Medicare/Medicaid-certified nursing home in the United States. Updated quarterly.
Federal Reserve — Survey of Consumer Finances. National-level wealth and income data for households by age of household head.
How We Display Data
All dollar amounts are in current (nominal) dollars as reported. Population counts may not sum to totals due to Census disclosure avoidance (rounding). Percentages are calculated from raw counts and may differ slightly from pre-computed Census percentages due to rounding.
Nursing home ratings are the CMS Five-Star Quality Rating System: 1 star (much below average) to 5 stars (much above average).
